    +1 uan. My brush element is black square with a white stroke which gives you the gaps.

    For the brush setup; pattern style with auto overlap on the corner settings and Colorization: tint. Also keep stroke scaling off.

    I made this with a blend, adjust the steps and stroke weight accordingly. Illustrator didn't shit itself either!

    After expanding the blend, I changed the stroke colour on alternate rings. Texture etc I guess you can add elsewhere : )
