I think for the moment its all theatre. There is probably an agreement for thoae 2 regions to use as buffer. So Russia its border is smaller making it "easier" to agree terms of "Ukraine Light'. Not Nato member but something in between. But putin such a cunt, he needs to fall flat on his for a change, he is getting way to brazen.
Maybe this opinion is wshful thinking
