Recently changed my monitoring setup from two 8" monitors to a pair of 5" and a sub.
I've been using a pair of Samson Rubicon's since 2007. They sound fine, and get plenty loud. But, I had two issues with them. First, I have no idea what's really going on sub 50hz. Possibly even a bit higher than that.
I have a friend who has his retired sound system in his basement, that we'll DJ on every once in a while. I'm always surprised by the sub bass (not in a good way) when testing tracks. Second, those monitors just overcook the highs/mid-highs. Even with the ability to reduce the highs by -2 db, they're too harsh. So, I ended up mixing those frequencies lower than they should have been.
So, after lots of research, I ended up with a pair of Adam A5V's, and a KRK 10s subwoofer. I was a little hesitant on getting another set with ribbon tweeters, but these are clearly much more accurate than the Rubicons. And, almost unbelievably, the Adam's actually have good bass for being so small.
I'm still getting used to them, but so far I'm pretty happy. The sub is already making a huge difference. And, contrary to what I read online about the difficulty setting up a sub, it's been a breeze. In fact, parts of my room that had bass build issues are much better WITH the sub.
- Nice. I recently switched from 9" Behringers to 7" Dynaudios and now considering a sub. Will have to wait until I save up or sell something.mort_
- Not particularly lacking in bass without a sub but I want my bones to shatter. :)mort_
- got a sub, made the whole room shake and it was promptly returned. subs are only good if your setup can handle it.autoflavour
