With the new chips — how does onboard RAM work in practice?

I'm looking to upgrade a 2019 16" MBP with 64GB ram 2TB hd. I'm wondering with the new stuff whether I need like for like or whether 32GB will suffice.

Most pressure I put on it is for batch editing large files but never more than 30 in a go. No video work, all stills.

I've watched the YouTube comparisons etc but does anyone here have any experience of moving from the old RAM to the new, and how much is needed in comparison, for the same job?

    Thanks

    • batch editing large files ie. > 32 GBs? if so then the M1 has 5x the memory bandwidth to transfer to/ from memory (10x on the M1 max)kingsteven
    • still waiting for mine though. but for video work mostly, if it's just still images are you sure you even benefit that much from 64gb vs 32gb atm?kingsteven
    • large files - each maybe 30mb, so max say 1.5GB at a time...not massive massive. No — not sure although at points there is swap.craigatkinson
    • the original M1 showed that even 8-16GB was handling memory loads like a champ and that bandwidth greatly reduced need for capacitymonospaced
    • So onboard RAM is a "group" memory - it's for everything, CPU, GPU access it at the same speed
so yeah, the more the better, 32GB min on the new MBPs
      ********
    • the more the better obviously, but in a lot of applications high system memory reqs by intel machines are due to caching that isn't required with the m1kingsteven
    • @craig it may be best if you look in to specific comparison on performance for the apps you usekingsteven
    • exactly, kingstevenmonospaced
    • @king comparison into what? you're basically comparing apples to oranges lol

      intel x86 vs apple arm
@monospace move along you again know nothing
      ********
    • Not sure why you’d say that. It’s not like what I’m saying is remotely incorrect, and you certainly have no right to tell anyone to move along.monospaced
    • @monospace your typical answer when you realise you're in deep over your head but you GOTTA save face
      ********
    • @craig from what you're describing your needs to be, even the 16GB RAM versions would do well
1.5GB bunch of files is nothing
      ********
    • Save face? What the hell are you talking about? I'm not in too deep, and if I am, you're right there with me. Stop being so condescending, it's weird.monospaced
    • It's you who needs to work on how you're perceived and received here, not me. Trust me on that one, because I'm not wrong. Saving face is your issue, buddy.monospaced
    • I'm not even claiming to be the expert, like you are, which is just more of your bullshit. I'm not that big of an ass. Keep it up, and keep earning QBN hate.monospaced
    • your basic lack of knowledge about apple tech or tech in general is amusing

is not me who is an expert you dumbass, it's you who knows too little
      ********
    • and I don't need to work on anything, I get along fine with a lot of users here, but a few who are weird af
      ********
    • You say that but really you can’t substantiate the claim. I dont know too little, and that is a really condescending thing to say. You’re an asshole.monospaced
    • If I was saying ignorant shit you might have a case, but I’m not. You’re just being a cunt. As usual. And that’s an issue that’s 100% on you.monospaced
