We live in different parts of the world, so technology-wise standards are not the same. Here in Germany for example, a lot of people prefer to pay in cash over cards or mobile payment solutions.

Yesterday, I was in France and bought some t-shirts at UNIQLO. They only had one cashier but 8 self-service counters. I really hate to scan tags from goods myself, so I stood in line for the cashier.

Then, they showed me how their self-service works: You throw all clothes in a plastic basket and it immediately shows up the total, you pay by card, done. No scanning of bar codes!

I could not identify where the RFID tag was, but at home, I saw, its glued between two sheets of paper what from the outside looks like a normal price tag.

For me this was an absolute first time experience. Is this common elsewhere in the world already?

    • It's also at Decathlon in France, pretty common in France, German like to pay in cash to avoid taxes?i_was
    • I assume the cash thing is to keep control of how much money you spend.SimonFFM
    • Well it'll all end in tears when RFID chips manufactured in Tawian are unobtainable due to shipping melt down high inflation + China invading Taiwan.shapesalad
    • Those Uniqlo bins are neat - we've had self-serve here in the UK for years, but the novelty of their approacj impressed me when I encountered them last year.Nairn
    • Decathlon is doing this since 2019,
      it's called RFID SCO.
@shapesalad the RFID manufacturing process doesn't requires an IC factory

    • Anyway I don't give a flying fuck about this technology where you toss a bunch of items in a bin and they get scanned.i_was
    • You find the shit, you carry that shit, you scan that shit, you pay for that shit. Fuck that shit.babydick
    • There should be a bag in that bin so you don't put it in just to take it out again. Too much fucking work.babydick

    • They tracked you all the way home too with those rfid tags pinging via your phone. they now know where you live.microkorg
    • I assume these were passive rfid tags, not active ones.SimonFFM
    • lol@mono :D:Dsted
    • yes they are passive, has a 1m max distance from the energy source to work. but you still need a key to read it, not just the hardware.sted
