I just watched a video of anti-mask parents screaming and threatening a pro-mask parent after a school board meeting in Tennessee and I was reminded of 'Under the Banner of Heaven' by Jon Krakauer. If you're not familiar with that book it's basically an expose on fundamentalist Mormons.

The book is both a history of Mormonism as well as smaller stories of people who receive personal messages from god, which is something the church encouraged at the beginning. The problem with encouraging people to receive these messages is that often times the 'messages' they get are evil as fuck. Killing family members who leave the church, breed with your own kids because god told you that one of your offspring will be the second coming of Jesus, etc. So they had to do away with that encouragement and instead told them that only the head of the church can receive messages. This is where the fundamentalists broke off from the mainline church.

Anyways, it hit me that the GOP is most likely finding themselves in a similar position now. They (and Fox) pumped that sweet anger/patriot/'the others'/'believe your own research (Youtube algo)'/alternative facts dopamine for decades. The bonfire really kicked off with an anti-vaxx Trump who spoke to all their base beliefs, and gave them permission to be themselves. So now the GOP has a base of voters who believe all sorts of nonsense and they can't reign them in without losing their jobs. These voters would turn on them in a dime if they actually told the truth or opposed Trump. So much so that they attack their own colleagues who tell the truth (Cheney/Kinzinger). It's out of control. I watched a Q&A session Asa Hutchinson (Gov of Arkansas) did where he's now pushing for vaccinations (after imposing a school mask ban earlier this year) and it was ugly.

    My 2 cents.

    • Case in point, this just popped up on Twitter. https://twitter.com/…mathinc

    • Trump got the covid vaccine. After covid and a night in the hospital. Don’t forget that shit.monospaced
    • It was when he questioned the masks and refused to wear one that really fucked things up. He implied it was a choice because not important.monospaced
