I live in NYC and yes, it is very expensive to live ANYWHERE in manhattan. Although I have always heard that SF is one of the most expensive cities in the country as well.
If you move to NYC, don't limt yourself to manhattan. Brooklyn and Queens have a ton of nice places to live that are much cheaper (although a lot of them are getting more expensive on account of gentrifaction). I live in the Bronx and its a bit of a commute to my work, but its nice and cheap.
