I found this gem on youtube. I love UK history.

But this... is so shocking I don't know what to be shocked at more. "Ulster will fight, and Ulster will be right!" sounds ominous. Makes my hair stand up.

Fact: 'West Briton' is not just some made up phrase thrown into Joyce's "The Dead." That was real. (people being accused of being West Britons)

Fact: someone at 19:50 claims the poor in Dublin "lived by the courtesy of... the Jewish community." Again, Joyce inserts Jewish characters into his work, and now I know why.

Fact: Someone was passing guns through the bushes to the ?orange volunteers? to defend against the anti-home rulers? Well at any rate, that seems out of place being that Europe is so anti gun. Weird.

What else to be shocked at. There are so many.

    • west brit still a phase you hear every now again in the north referring to southerners indifferent to unification/ otherwise oblivious of their own historykingsteven
    • it's exactly the same now, loyalist paramilitaries still funded by UK gov't, still have more guns, stormont entirely designed to keep nationalists out of powerkingsteven
    • police ignore criminal activity that funds the UVF, the orange order run a property monopoly. the big difference being that 120 years ago they thought ofkingsteven
    • themselves as racially superior. it's going to be an interesting few years.kingsteven
    • “stormont entirely designed to keep nationalists out of power” - is that common knowledge in the north? Never considered it but I don’t doubt it for a second.mort_
    • its designed to allow vetos (petitions of concern) on community grounds to block legislation. even by the time power sharing was established unionists startedkingsteven
    • jumping ship from the UUP to DUP in order to create a single unionist party larger than the biggest nationalist party (at the time SDLP)kingsteven
    • (the DUP being majority against the peace process) of course by 2003 this decimated both the UUP and SDLP and left most reasonable people without a voicekingsteven
    • Right yeah. What a farce.mort_
    • i can't see any way the DUP (even with redrawn electoral lines) will be the biggest party at the next elections. they will inevitably stall the executive againkingsteven
    • bringing the country under London rule (where the DUP not SF have seats) and will fight home rule in Westminster (another repeat of the 1880s)kingsteven
    • Most people are very aware and sick of it. DUP voters are dying off like mad. While SF actually coming off like a reasonably progressive party in the south.kingsteven
    • Yeah, SF did incredibly well in the last general election here.mort_
    • there's some nice little moves being made in Dublin ATM. making the 12th July an all Irish public holiday being discussed ATM, i think that's a genius move.kingsteven
    • it's like when parents buy the toddler a present from the new baby so they don't get jealous and throttle it in the cot :Dkingsteven
    • Fuck me. That’s one public holiday I won’t be taking off work.mort_
    • lol nice analogymort_
