In other words, USB 2.0 on the computer side looks the same, but on the device side is different. If your computer is 3 yrs. old, I gurantee (since the standard was created around 2 years ago, at least the commerical standard) then you need to buy a USB 2.0 card
Personally though, if it is for transferring large amounts of data, Firewire is better. USB works on packets, and Firewire works on streaming, so it is better for large file transfers.
