Many years ago (~2005?) I literally couldn't listen to this song as it would make extremely melancholic.
I think I perhaps misinterpreted the lyrics at the time - then, as a whistful pained acknowledgement of the passing of time and the dread inevitably of aging, whereas now I see it much more literally about heroin addiction. I'm still - 20 years after first liking this song - not entirely sure what it represents. I guess I don't delve deep any more.
Anyway, I can listen to it now. It would literally bring me to tears 16 years ago.
