I've been contemplating a switch to all vegetarian for a a while. Problem is: I eat a mostly low-carb diet. So, I already eat a shitload of vegetables and nuts. But, the rest of the diet is mostly beef and fish (never really cared for poultry).

So, I bought a 2-pack of Beyond Meat burgers to try out. They looked the part (which honestly doesn't matter to me), and smelled ok "raw", so I threw one in a pan to cook for 3-4 minutes per side (they state it's important to not overcook).

Oof, this thing is nasty. I honestly cannot understand how anyone compared the taste to a beef burger. I choked down two bites and binned it. Cooked the other one in the oven to make sure it wasn't me. It wasn't. I suppose if you put it in something that has lots of other ingredients, you could mask the "flavor". But, straight out of the pan? No.

Ironically, I love veggie burgers. I've made black bean & chickpea based burgers, and they turned out fantastic.

    • Then stick to beans! I have basically replaced all meat with beans in my diet. There are so many ways to cook with beans, and they have loads of proteindkoblesky
    • Eat less meat or fish, but buy local (if you have "trusted" farmers or fishermen) and you're doneOBBTKN
    • I cannot get with this 'fake' meat thing...when there is so much other great food you can eat.dkoblesky
    • Those kind of foods, "pretending being other kind of foods" are a faillure, very expensive, and lots of them, ultra-processedOBBTKN
    • The American obsession with meat, specifically beef, is so toxic to the planetdkoblesky
    • Yeah, I've been curious about replacement foods and tried a few, but every single one of them is just disgusting, hyper-processed shite.Nairn
    • They're all just some shitty combination of soy, wheat and pea protein with cellulose binder or whatever other crap.
What's your ..er.. beef with poultry?

    • When you throw away food you are directly feeding SATAN!shapesalad
    • @dkoblesky: I've sorta come to the "stick to beans" conclusion. I get heartburn when I eat too much many carbs. So, I need to experiment with what triggers it.section_014

    • Beans are excellent, very healthy, rice sucks

    • I have Seitan, which is 75g of protein per 100g. That stuff is the best, if you know how to cook it right. Asian stores have a lot of fake meats.Sellies
