BREAKING: SpaceX prototype rocket has exploded while landing in Texas

    • Lol. Breaking. It was a test. It was the most likely outcome.inv
    • the whole landing thing needs to be re-thought. too many variables and too much can do wrong trying to do it that way._niko
    • ie no built-in fail-safes. if a plane loses power, it can glide down, if a helicopter loses power it can land via auto-rotation. these rockets are just fucked._niko
    • They have multi engine redundancies. I am sure the first planes/helicopters had some issues too.inv
    • like it's just so unstable landing standing up, especialy at sea, it just tips over which is just physics. So why not land it laying down? like a harrier jet_niko
    • with a main thruster that can rotate downwards, a bunch of stabilizing thrusters along the length and then landing gear at the front, middle and back, like_niko
    • yeah it's still alpha? beta? but when they get to 1.0 oh boygrafician
    • placing a cigar gently down on a table. I don't know I'm just a QBN poster no rocket scientist._niko
    • even combine it with parachutes like this, might not be elegant but at least you won't lose a $100million rocket or worse, human life every time you land_niko

    • Sure they thought at all kinds of ways to land that rocket, they will figure it out eventually for sure.grafician
    • Also I think blasting $100 mil. rockets on purpose until you figure it out is pretty cheap for Elon until you get to go to Mars if succeeding with thisgrafician
    • The price of that test article is def not $100 mill.inv
    • As for how they land, the goal is full reusability. Not achieved with chutes.inv
    • Actually they seem to cost ONLY $10 mil. https://www.reddit.c…grafician
    • no wonder Elon blowing them up like firecrackersgrafician
    • i dunno i think they thought they really had this one. why else would you attempt to land so close to the next rocket?jonny_quest_lives
