This whole concept of the president being able to unilaterally pardon whoever he wants is kind of ridiculous if you think about it. Even when used for a good cause it basically just points to a failure of our justice system. Better to fix the problems then give someone dictator-like powers that will be abused.
Even weirder is this idea the media talks about that Trump can issue a "pre-emptive pardon." So he can pardon someone for something they haven't even been charged with yet?
- Yeah, how is that okay?scarabin
- It's totally insane.PhanLo
- pardons cannot be broad so they don't get blanket protections. Also, a pardon has to state the crimes they're being pardoned for.dorf
- Who knows? Apparently after the Watergate scandal Nixon's vice president pardoned him for every crime he may have committed during his presidency, yuekit
- and this was considered OK. Like a lot of things in USA law people treat it seriously but they are basically making this shit up as they go...yuekit
- I get why it was initially set up, but it is completely abused and should be abolished.dbloc
