If these people really believed in the American exceptionalism they claim we possess, and in America being the greatest nation on earth, they would realize that their idiotic and criminal actions do nothing but make us look weak, and make us laughed at by the rest of the world they think we’re better than, or some kind of advanced power within. China is already mocking us for what took place yesterday: https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/…

That is what is really so insane to me about yesterday, and about the build up to this. These people are incapable of stopping down for even a second worth of time to realize that what they are doing is exactly what the nations they hate want America to be doing to itself. I mean, maybe it’s just me, but if I really was patriotic, and really had legitimate American pride, and really wanted to showcase that exceptionalism, I would double down on trying to not make this place look like what it does. I would not be storming the Capitol attempting to live out some bizarre fever dream of a second civil war.

They are revealing weakness and division that will no doubt continue to be exploited by foreign adversaries who would love nothing more to them to see the end of American democracy. These people, even if they don’t see it, are literally taking pride in our downfall. To hell with them. I hope all the good people I know shun anyone in their lives that condones this, celebrates it, turned a blind eye to it, or treats this as some isolated incident that is forgotten about within the week.

Right now, at this moment, because of this president, and because of what he's done to this nation, we, the "greatest nation in the world," the "shining city on the hill," the "freest country on earth," are at rock bottom. We are none of these things.

    • American exceptionalism is also, and maybe mostly, about not having to follow the same rules as other countries. So this behavior is totally on brand.palimpsest
    • ^ haha that is a very good point actuallyyuekit
    • But yes it is damaging, totally aside from any notion of "exceptionalism." Even allies of the USA are now wondering WTF is going on.yuekit
    • In Korea for instance: "downfall of the U.S.... is the U.S. actually a democratic country?"yuekit
