I'm from the North, where in my experience at least 'mate' tends to be used sarcastically or aggressively. I'm more of a 'pal' (or even 'chum' because I'm a twat) person.

Anyway, I'm swapping work emails with an Australian, and obviously the usage over there is meant much more earnestly and warmly, but every time I read it in his mails I mentally stumble a little, thinking "is he being sarccy?" haha. I know he's not, and this is a problem entirely in my own head and of my own devising, but anyway.

Back to the American Political Clusterfuck, mates!

    • Cool story... Bro!OBBTKN
    • haha, you've said it to me a few times, but knowing you're Basque, i hear it differently! :)Nairn
    • If I had known before, I would have told you more often, be sure ;)OBBTKN

    • from a northerner in Aus's perspective, mate is prolific here but it's not only sincere. It can be very sarcy or even aggro, but note I am also a twat.MrT
    • standard over here too mate. i'll only take 'pal' from a northerner - occasionally mates from the midlands hit me with 'duck' and i go weak at the kneeskingsteven

    • I'm not sure 'pal' is ever acceptable unless trying to patronise someone and/or lead into a fight.fadein11
    • It's all in the inflection.thumb_screws
    • Imagine for Americans where we typically hear “mate” only as a verb. Or when talking about finding a endangered species to breed.monospaced
    • It's confusing, even if you live in Aus. If someone is being a dickhead, you tend to to tell your mate, that the dickhead is their mate.slappy
    • For example, if some idiot is wasted and trying to start fights near you, you will turn to your mate, and ask him to tell his mate to pull his head in.slappy
    • Therefore 'a mate' is usually more likley to be someone you dont know, that you say your mate knows.slappy
