the word gave us ancient religions and the scribe gave us ones we still have until today. Protestantism could be said to be a product of the age of print; Scientology and a swathe of random new age attractors the product of the radio and TV ages.

what new religion will the internet's global collective form?

    • I'm guessing something to do with K-Pop.Nairn
    • IncelismPhanLo
    • Atheism.Morning_star
    • Atheism predated all religion. It is arguably the default setting until tainted by someone’s version of a myth or fairy tale.monospaced
    • I'm really unsure how you could say that with any amount of certainty.Nairn
    • Perhaps the seed of consciousness itself relies on the idea of A.N.Other; Ying to the Yang - and from the offset, Sky Daddy's peering in.Nairn
    • I'd actually suggest the concept of God, or some Greater Other, came before language.Nairn
    • Appleism. With a minority of Googleists.shapesalad
    • Are dogs atheists then?
If we could transfer our conscience to dogs would they believe in god then? Would that make us God's true children?

    • If you only believe in one god then you are basically atheist because you are saying the other few hundred aren’t real. Atheism is just one further.monospaced
    • Of course it’s true. All concepts of god are man made. Therefore atheism is default until told to believe a concept or they make one up themselves.monospaced
    • Do we know when god was invented?palimpsest
    • lol a God exists even if we write it in the books or not...grafician
    • And when did consciousness begin? If science could give us the dates we could finally disprove the existence of God.palimpsest
    • Nobody knows if any god exists.monospaced
    • And what religion says god created human consciousness? Ridiculous.monospaced
    • Every being on the planet with the brain capacity for it is conscious. Derp.monospaced
    • @mono. Atheism is a (dis)belief and requires a deity, it ISN’T a default position.Morning_star
    • So you're saying, absolutely, that animals don't believe in God, or some sort of otherwise Higher Order?
I'm not sure how to test this.
      Nairn
    • I'm fairly sure that cats don't believe in God.Nairn
    • At least, not one we humans might consider to be on our side.Nairn
    • "All concepts of god are man made" - mono. I'm also unsure how this could be qualified, absolutely. it's a messy subject.Nairn
    • What I'm saying is that the idea of god comes with conscience. Therefore, we are not by default atheists. Unless we can give the dates on when each appeared.palimpsest
    • If we could separate the dates on the appearance of conscience and god.palimpsest
    • And my mind uploading to a dog wasn't a supposed case.palimpsest
    • I’m certain that consciousness appeared way before the concept of ‘god’. There is some compelling evidence for spiritual behaviour in primates.Morning_star
    • But God predates the concept of 'god'?palimpsest
    • pre dates, predates
      Read it each way.

    • I think God is the product of a Religion. ‘god’ is the Prime Mover, the Creator and doesn’t require religion. It follows therefore that ‘god’ came first.Morning_star
    • I like it when QBNers take things a step further.
You don't believe in God but you believe in 'god'?
      palimpsest
    • I think it’s a very complex subject, and to try and do it justice in the limited side notes would be a miracle :) That said, the problem I have with...Morning_star
    • ...’religion’ is the dogma and doctrine. God requires adherence to a sect: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism etc. ‘god’ encompasses Everything, All, The....Morning_star
    • ...Universal.Morning_star
    • .... and is more of a concept than a belief. It’s more like Dawkin’s ‘God of the gaps’ conceptMorning_star
    • Atheism doesn’t require a god to exist. It just means one doesn’t believe one exists. It’s not complicated.monospaced
    • For example, most Christians don’t believe Zeus, Thor or Krishna exist. They are atheist in that sense I suppose.monospaced
    • If there is no god(s) there is no atheism.Morning_star
    • Personally I think the universe is perfectly amazing as a natural occurrence. All evidence points toward that and it’s awe inspiring.monospaced
    • Yeah, but imagine there was a God sitting on a layer atop of that, fucking with you, just Because.Nairn
    • The world only gave us flora and faunai_was
    • The belief that technology like AI, ML, are actually more than man made. That will be the new religion. We already see it starting to happen on the fringes.nb
    • Give it a century, you’ll see!nb
