What a beautiful day..
Even though I just inserted my hand in the path of a 40watt Co2 laser running at near full power, trying to quickly adjust a piece.
The subtle, pervasive aroma not unlike a backyard steak cook-off.
still a beautiful day...
- burgers?grafician
- ouch. also - how the fuck? did you disable the safeties? tsssk.Nairn
- Top tip for laser users: If you're on Ibuprofen/Advil - DON'T look at the cut, even through protective layers. Close your eyes, press pause, then check.Nairn
- yep, should have pressed pause. lolfuturefood
- also, we disabled the sensors so you can open the lid while cuttingfuturefood
- I've never once physically interacted with the beam in the 10 plus years i've been dicking around with it. I'm actually a little surprised to realise.Nairn
- eh - I'm serious about the Ibuprofen thing, FF, btw. For the operator and anyone coming close to the machine whilst it's cutting.Nairn
- ^ damnGnash
- yea, never again. hahafuturefood
- few days ago i took some Ibuprofen, which i rarely ever use. I wasn't operating the laser that day. What happens? retinas detach? im afraid to know!futurefood
- it can partially blind you. happened to me last year, so now i have this tiny irritating squiggle in my left eye. bit of a fucker.Nairn
- i had a terrible flu, worst I've felt forever (not covid, sadly), but had to work, so took Ibu and came in. Checked machine as I have a thousnd times andNairn
- when i walk away i realise there's a small imprint of the last 0.5s worth of cutting. Shit happens sometimes. But this time, it didn't go away.Nairn
- panicked. did a load of research. turns out Ibu does this in certain instances anyway, but i'm guessing the intensity of the [shielded] light was enoughNairn
- so burgers?!grafician
- to fuck things up permanently. It's a lot better now (I struggle to see it in normal conditions), but if I close my right eye and focus on it, it's there.Nairn
- so burgers with pickles?!grafician
- whoa, thanks for heads upfuturefood
- Do not look into laser with remaining eye" and all that! °)Nairn
- What's a good laser cut machine to start ?i_was
- engraving / cut machinei_was
- If you're starting out, join a hackerspace and familiarise yourself with whatever machine they have. After that, outsource, after you're making money, then askNairn
- ..that question. Your need dictates the machine - 'good' would be at least £5-10K+ these days.Nairn
- Decent etching requires a 'Good' machine. Most machines can cut well - even shitty Chinese ones. You just slow things down.
Quick and Good = £££Nairn - I got one of those blue chinese ones and it broke within a month. No support or service. Most expensive paperweight i ever boughtscarabin
- ha. I was so worried when I first saw those!
I thought "that's it, I'm irrelevant".
Thankfully not. Just yet.
I give it another 2½ years... .Nairn - You s ound like you've got the smarts to fix it and improve on it, though? Is the tube fucked? Everything else should be hackable.Nairn
- Do you have an air extractor on your machine ? they say it's important.i_was
- Is this good : https://tinyurl.com/… ?i_was
- yes, of course you have an extractor - it's a burny thing.Nairn
