Slightly off-topic, although not absolutely (one of microkorg's notes on this page made me realise this'd be a good place to ask) -

Do any of you beat-making parental-types (or even just kids at heart-types) have any suggestions for 'musical interactive widgets' for young children?

if I was smarter and had more time I'd make something, but obviously it' dbe just simpler/safer and better to buy something, rather than risk electrocuting or cutting my child.

One of those tracker-type grids with buttons would be cool, but then the only ones I've seen were.. Not Cheap.

    Thanks for any thoughts

(I've currently got an M-Audio Axiom keyboard in the studio here to be fixed to take back to her - I think it's a little overwrought for her at her age though).

    • oh, haha - I just scrolled up to see that stoplying's got likely the same slightly-busted keyboard :)Nairn
    • I suppose 'a tablet and some apps' would suffice - but we're limiting her access to glowing touchy-swipey rectangles 'til she's 16.Nairn
    • What the fuck is the proper name for those music tracker grid things? Surely there must be a Chinese rip off by now?Nairn
    • Y'know - the things that are a few inches on eitehr side and made up of a matrix of buttons that when pressed make noises as the thing tracks through?Nairn
    • Step sequencer?mort_
    • don't overthink it just buy a small keyboard, something like a Casio SA-46. then she'll get familiar with the basics of music.hans_glib
    • My 11 year old loves Garage Band on the iPad. Finds it easier than Ableton or the full Garageband on Mac.mort_
    • I guess so? But simpler? There was some self-contained toy that came out about a decade ago that fits what I''m imagining.. was just expensive.Nairn
    • It looked *vaguely* like this sort of thing:

    • Ideally it would be the sort of thing that could work on its own, with a speaker inside, etc. Not just a midi input device. Can't remember wtf it was calledNairn
    • @hans - A Casio PT-1! :)
      Ooh, £25 on Ebay... https://bit.ly/2RB2k…

    • Then there's also the LittleBits / Korg synth which is also not cheap but looks so much fun and perfect for younger kids.mort_
