Need to update my portfolio...with CASE STUDIES ugh!
Don't really get the need for other ppl in the industry to see "process" from us, it's like they still think we're just "artsy people" and need to justify everything we do visually, you know?
"I don't do wireframes and personas for a freakin' button Karen, I just make it blue!"
- Yup, people don't want to see just pretty pictures any more, they want to see case studies of your process, findings, pitfalls, outcomes etc.microkorg
- Had to do the same last year. Whilst it was a pain in the ass I found it made me think about these projects more indepth in this waymicrokorg
- ..so actually made it easier for me to talk about them in interviews - in the way that an interviewer wanted to hear about them not just me talking aboutmicrokorg
- the 'design'. Also for the interviewer it helps whittle out folks with 'fake' portfolios full of nice artwork and concepts that they had little involvement in.microkorg
- Ever hire anyone? You need to see process so you know a person can analyze and talk about their work in an intelligent way.********
- It shows they can reproduce good work. More importantly, talking about your work in meaningful ways is half the job.********
- @nb I only care about the final work, don't care about people fetishes with design process. I could also write a book about the BS in the design industry rn********
- @micro interviewer who? Donna from HR with no experience judging creative work?********
- Anyway process should be simple:
Thinking & Doing. You think for a week about a problem, then design it in a few days. End.******** - Want to really hire somebody, put them on 1-3 months contract, let them do their thing, see the results, offer them a permanent position after.********
- Not to mention "DESIGN EXERCISES"?! Bitch I have 15 years experience, you work for a 3 month-barely-started... who are you?!********
- barely-started-start...********
- barely started startup*********
- Imagine HR Lakers asking Bron "what's your process" and Bron "well, I dribble the ball, crush their defence, then dunk it" HR "Wow, amazing, you're hired!"********
- Ok so you think you’re the Lebron James of design? LOL********
- If someone has case studies on their site, interview them and you’re good. Design tests are for people who don’t incl case studies on their site. :)********
- @nb well as the saying goes "bitch I might be!"********
- But no, I just find it ridiculous all this time wasted with case studies and design tests and all that BS for a 30 min discussion and a job booked********
- All this is because idiots not giving credits, or taking all the credits and doing shit and ppl not trusting a portfolio of works anymore.********
- Kids with 4-6 "case studies" in their folio where they did 2 pop-ups and 3 buttons over 2-3 years at Dropbox somewhere getting credit while veterans with...********
- ...hundreds of projects under their belt getting asked for design tests after 10 years working their butts in agencies common let's be real here********
- But shut up nb, show me your case studies! Now! Let's see if I can hire you for my new shiny bullshit delivering-groceries startup!********
- No they aren’t. People who make decisions about hiring aren’t idiots. But I don’t have time to interview 20 to 300 people for every position. Case studies help.********
- We only interview people that are potential hires. I don’t want to waste your time or mine.********
- nb it would take me a few hours to get thru 300 folios and select my next 5 guys to interview and hire 1 in under 3 days, wtf********
- I would even have time to offer portfolio & career advice in those 3 days for the 4 other poor souls that didn't make the cut and even recommend other jobs********
- anyway, I'm ranting here, I need to make those f case studies by tomorrow, hit me up on instagram and show me your case studies, maybe I'll learn something new********
- 300 portfolios in a few hours? If you spent only only minute on each, it would take 5 hours without a break. Not including time to compare, select and respond.********
- Anyway, I don’t need to argue with you, I’m just telling you how people hire. Just do one really dope case study. SPEND TIME TO WRITE WELL.********
- Don’t waste time on multiple case studies unless you have very specific things to show on each. One is best because they’ll read it. Focus on that.********
- Yes 300 is not a problem, I have 70-90 tabs open at all times man, I recommended interns that are now Brand Managers and others won Cannes Lions lol********
- Also is not the writing, it's all the assets that need to be edited and presented, think 9-12 case studies, next job is with Fitbit mate lol********
- @nb really appreciate your input mate, chill, no arguing here lol********
- But if you need help with hiring next time, 300-500 portfolios in a day is not a problem for me I have ADHD lol, I can run them real quick********
- Imagine I do font recognition for my designer friends, running thru hundreds of fonts in an hour, I'm just an AI super hive mind that does design on the side********
- /s ofc********
