Trump’s major achievement is empowering the truly stupid and stubborn crowd in this country to speak up. He’s empowered the ignorant. I’ve met so many of these people who say dumb things like, “I don’t care what they say, I’m...” and then they say the dumbest things. I’ve heard people argue that seatbelts kill more than they save. That motorcycle helmets do nothing to protect you. That god will protect them against anything.
And now, it’s the masks. The idea that Covid is fake. These people use to keep their opinions relegated to their backyard fires and smoke breaks and saloons. But Trump didn’t invent these folks. Trump has empowered them people to speak up. To say, “I don’t have to listen to anyone! You can’t make me! My opinion is all the facts I need!”
Stomping around shouting like little children. And in the next breath complaining that American opportunity has passed them by. I can feel sorry for these people, but it’s hard to empathize.
- The only positive thing I can think of is that these people with such ridiculous views are now being heard and contestedIanbolton
- Maybe we needed to go through this? I don't know. Either way, it's fucking mental!Ianbolton
- it's what happens when you import all your brains from abroad and don't have any of your own.scruffics
- trump is a product of america, not the other way round, to hate trump is to hate your country, to hate your country is perfectly healthy, better to address thekingsteven
- issue than to hope for a centrist president that allows it to perpetuate but with a rousing motivational speech.kingsteven
- Trump presidency. Never forget.********
- Trump is sort of like a cult leader. Yes you need desperate or gullible people to start a cult, but not anyone can do it.yuekit
- America had plenty of problems before he came along but he is a uniquely bad influence on top of everything else.yuekit
- yeah, i don't mean 'he's a wealthy sociopath' i mean as president he's post-modernist constitutionalism manifest. reactionary conservatism battling liberalskingsteven
- with the same freedoms they hold dear. it's how america as a nation has excused its atrocities for years in a constant battle between the judiciary and liberalskingsteven
- but implemented as an individualist ideology as 'freedoms'.kingsteven
- Notice how there are similar far-right populist leaders in almost every part of the world though. Narendra Modi, Jair Bolsonaro, Duterte in Philippines...yuekit
- So while I'm happy to criticize the USA, I don't think it can all be pinned on the American system or on liberalism generally. It's worse than that, many peopleyuekit
- just naturally tend towards authoritarianism and a reactionary worldview. You can see this by how easily people gravitate towards various far-right ideologiesyuekit
- and belief systems online. Many of them just didn't have someone to vote for until this current wave of shithead leaders showed up. So in that respect Trumpyuekit
- actually shows that USA is NOT that different from the rest of the world, US voters can get taken in by a demagogue just as easily as everyone else.yuekit
- Indeed but in other countries we have traditions of left and right... we have populists but we also have nationalists and many flavours in between...kingsteven
- While Bolsonaro and Duterte modeled themselves in the image of Trump in the simplicity of their idiology many other leaders are traditional right nationalistskingsteven
- It would be almost impossible in the uk for example for Nigel Farage to become prime minister. We have boris because the alternative was too left.kingsteven
- Just the idea that a tv celebrity with no political background could become leader of the free world is american constitutional post modernismkingsteven
- Executive orders to remove the US from the Iran deal. paris agreement. How does that happen?kingsteven
