    Like microkorg, I've probably already said this, but - I was in my first job in London, sat next to a New Yorker who surprised me with his fairly placcid reaction. It was more expected resignation - I recall him saying something like "well, we've had it coming". Probably one of the first times in my life I stood back from the standard narrative and thought about things in larger terms.

    Beyond that - it was just shock. The company closed for the rest of the day, encouraging everyone to go home and be with their families, or whatever. Not sure if it was a sentimental decision or just the blunt realisation that no one was going to achieve anything useful that day.

    in the days after, no (fewer?) planes overhead, and when they did start coming back online, y'got the idea everyone's paying the low-flying ones a lot more attention that usual.
