I had a similar problem. I was told to replace the modem (for free through my ISP). When I took it in, they told me that I would never get the speeds I was paying for because they gave me the wrong modem.
Installed the new modem and my speeds went way up, but I kept dropping the signal. I read that router should get replaced about every 3 to 4 years. I am on my 3rd set of new routers and they seem to be ok. We have a pretty big house and had a hard time with dead spots, so I tried mesh with no luck. I ended up with 2 routers, one upstairs and one downstairs and connected the upstairs with a cable, so now we have coverage throughout the house as well as across the street.
So i suggest calling your ISP about a new modem and go from there.
