How the fuck is it possible that Covid-19 became an argument about mask “freedom?”

Americans are being hoodwinked. At the heart of the problem is Big Tech, the govt, the inept president and the news media.

    • Big Tech? At the heart of it is anti-intellectualism and distrust of authority.i_monk

    • Americans aren’t being hoodwinked, Americans are idiots._niko
    • This country needs an enema!Akagiyama
    • Algorithms created and bolstered by Big Tech cause clustering of groups. They allow for an unprecedented misinformed public.

    • People can't even begin to understand how they're being manipulated by the apps they use and sites they visit. People live in totally skewed realities now.

    • We live in a world where the belief in a Flat Earth came back into our society (in a small way). No one could've predicted that.

    • That's just an example, of course. Just pointing out how deep some people have gone down the fake news rabbit hole.

    • You realize those same algorithms are at work in Korea, Canada, etc?i_monk
    • America is the world's Florida.

Which makes the UK the world's Georgia or Alabama or something, I guess.

    • nb is right. Big tech plays a huge role in creating regional echo chambers.Al_dizzle

    • Filter bubbles and echo chambers need something to work from. The heart of the problem isn't those things, it's the idiots reinforced by them.i_monk
    • The heart of the problem is the internet and social media. How the fuck do you regulate what people say to one an other without freedom of speech...Ianbolton
    • being destroyed. And then we have Trump spewing out as much bollocks as you can imagine feeding that whole machine. We're fucked!Ianbolton
    • We act like these social networks and manipulative algorithms were handed down from God above and are unavoidable facts of life. Defund facebook! :)

    • Break up facebook, it won't fix the anti-intellectualism and distrust of authority endemic to the US.i_monk
    • It would likely stop the spread of that sentiment though. Instead of compounding the problem like it does today.Al_dizzle
    • Censoring social media is not a violation of a freedom. That actually is the idiotic premise behind a lot of this.monospaced
    • Fair enough. The WHO had to apparently step in as Anti-Vaxxers were spreading so much shit on social media - but who polices this shit? Facebook?!Ianbolton
    • Facebook has every right to police misinformation, and it would never be a violation of a freedom.monospaced
