Trump's favorite tactic is to slap sanctions, bans, restrictions and tariffs on other countries. Can anyone name an example of where this actually worked?

Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba...all economically vulnerable countries that Trump sanctioned, and yet none of them agreed to go along with U.S. demands. The sanctions certainly did hurt people in those countries, but their leaders seem to be doing just fine.

Now he's going to "punish" China by revoking treaties and trade agreements with Hong Kong. The likely result is that Hong Kong will become less open to the world and more economically reliant on mainland China moving forward rather than the west. How does that achieve anything the US or the Hong Kong democracy movement wants?
