Are Art Directors in agencies also designers?

Can someone be hired to be an art director because they're good at concepting and pitching but don't know how to design editorials or logos well?

    • Last Senior Art I met only knew Photoshop, literally he had only the Ps icon on his desktop...

    • He only did comps, the DTP guys hated him as almost none of his "layouts" were printable. He is Group CD now.

    • But no, most of them are shitty designers. Also yes, most of them are great pitching comp ideas. Awards and all that.

    • but they can't distinguish Arial from Helvetica...

    • So if you're a shitty designer but strong on the ideas side, sure dude, you can be Global Executive Creative Director in no time...

    • In my experience, the creative director creates the idea. The art director creates the visual library. The designers use the library to create designs.DRIFTMONKEY
    • creative director does not creates the idea.

    • That's right, the ideas and concepts come from the AD in an ad agency.zarkonite
    • ^ Err. Generally, no. The ideas come from — normally — a copywriter/AD team. Sometimes solo CW, sometimes solo AD, but generally it's the CW/AD team.Continuity
