Phylogenetic network analysis of SARS-CoV-2 genomes

    https://www.pnas.org/content/117…

This is dense reading but interesting...about how different variations of the virus spread around the world. Apparently the type most common in Asia is actually not the original strain, although it probably originated in China at an earlier point.

    • i read this one when it came out about a month ago, found it interesting but saw a few virologist folks tear it apart afterwards.kingsteven
    • My main question is why different regions have been affected so differently. Could Asia have been hit by a milder strain?yuekit
    • Many of the countries right next to China such as Thailand, Vietnam barely saw any deaths.yuekit
    • that was one of the big criticisms about this diagram in particular. 'BAT' should be a short walk away from the rest of this cluster...kingsteven
    • ie. it's so far away from any of the mutations we know of that it could be arbitrarily connected to any branch...kingsteven
    • i've also read quite a few articles (a while ago now) debunking the 'two main strains' theories...kingsteven
    • This one talks about three types, but I've noticed a lot of articles seem contradictory on this point, in terms of how many strains or variations there are.yuekit
    • It is crazy to me though, Vietnam (with a land border to China) has zero deaths, vs. 70,000 in the USA. And Vietnam is not a small country, it has more peopleyuekit
    • than the UK does. Thailand (where I am now) had the most exposure to travelers from Wuhan out of any country in the world. Months later, we have only 50 deaths.yuekit
    • Can all of that really be explained by the virus just failing to take root here? I feel like if these Western countries the media would be paying a lotyuekit
    • more attention to this.yuekit
    • it seems thailand has about half the >65s of the UK, 9% obese vs 26%... i imagine that alone has a huge effect on symptomatic cases / deaths.kingsteven
