Nairn was hypothesising on this a few days ago... eek

A study shows high prevalence of obesity in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) requiring invasive mechanical ventilation.

    https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/…

Worth noting that this study is from France where 17% of the population is obese although counted for 70% of intubations.

In the UK 25% are Obese
    In America it's 40%

    • And the virus hasn't even truly hit all of the States yet. April is going to be awful.nb
    • It would suggest that the US needs at least twice the amount of ventilators per head as France, pretty scary stuff.kingsteven
    • Obesity rates are 36% and 28% respectively, not 40 and 25monospaced
    • It’s also not news that obesity related conditions are contributors to death rates. Obesity itself isn’t actually a factor, but diabetes and heart conditions armonospaced
    • Those were outlined from the very beginning. And proving true.monospaced
    • "The need for IMV was significantly associated with male sex (p<0.05) and BMI (p<0.05), independent of age, diabetes, and hypertension."kingsteven
    • "Disease severity increased with BMI" - diet causes all these conditions this study shows that obesity is the indicator (third after age, sex)kingsteven
    • ahh, i used the eurostat obesity stats for france and uk. CDC for US (actually 42%)kingsteven
    • WHO stats actually put France at 22% tookingsteven
