re: Diabetes, above - I'm probably going to be shat on by karma for saying this, but one thing I've noted in the daily-reported "Not-so-old person with no underlying health conditions dies from C-19" stories is that a lot of them are 'a bit hefty' - not fat, not gross or anything - just a bit big-boned. ie. the sort of people, now that you mention diabetes, who might suffer from the condition without necessarily recognising it as such.

    • had this image in my head since reading about the overweight middle aged male 'superspreader' in china (carried the virus for 49 days until plasma treatment)kingsteven
    • i got dumped on a week ago for posting a podcast that specifically mentioned that obesity was a factor in mortality and why it was going to hit the USA hard.MrAbominable
    • You got a link to that, MrAbominable?

    • @Nairn - the JRE episode with Michael Osterholm (epidemiologist). Re Obesity. Fair warning, not going to change your opinion on JRE if you're predisposed.MrAbominable
    • It's a fascinating interview nonetheless: https://www.youtube.…MrAbominable
    • Being fat is only of a benefit in famine.shapesalad

    • overweight increases risk i read 2 two weeks ago.neverscared
    • I more meant being 'solid' rather than overweight. But yeah, point taken - no novel thinking here. It was just something I noticed.Nairn
    • "novel" thinking.MrAbominable
    • Yeah, my thoughts exactly, ppl not knowing they had underlaying issues and appearing healthygrafician
    • The weight itself isn’t the issue. It’s just an indicator for actual issues, like hypertension and diabetes. Like Nairn said, unrecognized at the time.monospaced
    • I’m probably a bit big boned by your estimation. Not even close to fat but not even remotely skinny. I’m scared risk, but I’ve also had a strong immune system.monospaced
    • Year after year my wife and son get the flu. Bad. Really bad. Wanting to die bad. Year after year I barely get fatigued and I’m basically swapping spit all daymonospaced
    • I’m starting to wonder if we already had it and didn’t know.monospaced
    • the average person in the UK is overweight, the average person in the US (BMI~29) is borderline obese. just another thing to add to the causation calculations.kingsteven
    • but it's all statistics... plenty of really healthy bigger folks out there. obesity could be a multiplier if other conditions or age added in to the mix.kingsteven
