I love most westerns, but this one is particularly good. Some of the most stylish work by Roger Deakins ever. Great performances, great soundtrack. Just beautiful.
This was filmed near where I lived at the time, a friend was an extra in it. Apparently the studio execs didn't travel up to the location until shooting was nearly finished. They hadn't seen any footage. They had trusted the director and figured hey it's a Jesse James movie. Slam dunk.
The legend goes that upon seeing the rough cut someone from the studio was like "what the fuck is this, you made it into an art film we're going to lose so much money". But it was too late to reshoot so they just left them alone to finish it.
