I used to do it in my early 20s when I had a lot of time for naps. It took me a week to master it.
What worked for me was picking a known object or person to try to dream about. Eventually when that object appeared in my dream it made me conscious I was dreaming. At first I woke up right away but gradually I managed to walk the line between dream and consciousness. It's a fine line and you'll usually end up waking up, what worked for me was giving myself an order and then letting the unconscious take over.
I also had bad experiences usually when taking naps where I felt conscious but couldn't control my body, it was an overall feeling of dread. I eventually learned to calm myself down until it passed and I could wake up.
A couple months ago I had a brief lucid dream without even trying.
Don't expect too much out of it, it's just a fun trick.

    • lying on the back, drifting into an afternoon nap makes that switch let happen easier for me, these dreams are mostly with people.sted
    • but deciding a subject of the dream worked exactly like you described. weirdsted
