Well, I did it. I purchased my first handgun today here in the great state of California (also known by many conservatives as 'commiefornia'). I visited three gun shops on this unusually rainy day - all three packed; each with their fair share of patrons wearing surgical masks and gloves.

The first had a 3+ hour wait to take the firearm certification exam - a test comprised of multiple choice and true/false questions. The last shop I visited had the shortest line and I was able to get in and take my test. I scored a 28 out of 30 on my first try (2nd attempt available after 24 hr period) and then proceeded to select and purchase the pistol of my choice. The paperwork was as lengthy as that of a new hire at a place with security clearance I would imagine, though overall it was a pretty straight-forward process.

I didn't write the number down but as my gun was being registered the guy helping me said I was almost the five-thousandth person to purchase a firearm TODAY in the state of California. Based on those numbers and the mad rush I witnessed today, I imagine over the coming weeks the numbers will grow significantly.

I'm not really the gun-toting, 2nd amendment exercisin', patriot of an American that you'd normally picture. But I gotta admit, if I was to profile the guys and handful of women I saw today in those shops, I'd say they weren't either - especially if you take into account the long lines for everyone taking the firearm certification test. I pick the gun up in 10 days, and only then can I purchase ammo.

So there you have it. Hazmat suit, TP, water, beans, rice, and a miniature hand cannon, and you're good to go!
