One thing that irritates me when we face scenarios like this and there's the inevitable and entirely justifiable push back from people is the accusation that The Media (Capital T, Capital M bad hombre) is to blame for stoking fears and over-inflating a situation.

We ARE The Media. The Media is US - a reflection of who and what we are as a society.

Now, like most things, this is not in an absolute sense, so outliers and cynics might choose to frame themselves in opposition to this distinctly-seperate force, but essentially, we all feed off the same fears and hopes and so the media (small t, small m) that we create and consume reflects and represents that. At worst, The Media is simply an n = n + 1 feedback mechanism that we're all responsible for creating, whether we like it or not.

I say this as someone who's pretty much ignored most of The Media's reporting on this subject - most of the stuff I've been following is nerdery and science-whizzery from Those Wot Kno. And it's still pretty bleak. If not more so.
