A good friend's just got his first car after passing his test last year.

I was - as a semi-autistic knowitall internerd twat - giving him some advice about gear changes - "don't be afraid to skip Second gear and go from First to Third sometimes" and "when you're in slow/stop heavy traffic, just start off in Second, it's easier".

Turns out the second one's terrible advice, as it wears down the clutch faster. I never knew!

I wonder how many other bad driving habits I have?

    • if you rev the engine just right you can change gears with no clutch ;)renderedred
    • except 1st and r of courserenderedred
    • save on break pads, down shift to slow your car.shapesalad
    • can't find it...grind itutopian
    • Yeah, those are pretty bad. Turns out they designed the gears to go 1...2...3...4...5... figure!formed
    • shapesalad, that's old advice. break pads are cheaper than a new gearbox so new advice is just to use breaks...microkorg
    • ... however downgearing is damn fun when you have a performance exhaust system ;)microkorg
    • Going from 4th to R at high speeds is also never advisable!futurefood
    • R is fo Racing!robotron3k
    • @formed - there's nowt wrong with skipping a gear going up or down though, if you want or need to.Nairn
