    • context: played a trombone for the first time yesterday and my mind is blown... it really is that fucking easy.kingsteven
    • I’m curious what you thought was happening before.monospaced
    • i played clarinet in an orchestra i've hired brass sections for recording sessions... always thought brass was magic, how they get so many notes from 3 valveskingsteven
    • or a slide. they're just doing a squeaker in to the mouthpiece... never played any brass and was able to play a melody in 5 minutes.kingsteven
    • just found it so intuitive, i'm seriously bidding on trumpets on eBay right now.kingsteven
    • wait till you play the bagpipes... a whole new ball game. cock and ball game that is...shapesalad
    • Yeah. I played all the horns and reeds basically. You can hop up and down the range with different lip tightness. Good stuff.monospaced
    • i've had a go on uilleann pipes (the irish version with bellows and no mouthpiece) the brass thing is probably trauma from orchestra selection as a kid...kingsteven
    • 7y/o wanting to play the trumpet, joining the orchestra, walk in to the room and a guy just looks at me and says "Clarinet" - and that was me for 8 years!kingsteven
    • I also started in clarinet. Then moved on to the saxophones for jazz band in junior high. Took seriously through HS and picked up French horn for orchestra.monospaced
    • nice, i'm looking at french horns and euphoniums atm... the brass sounds i love are in baritone range, i live across the road from a salvation army hall...kingsteven
    • and can hear them rehearse, they play some surprisingly complex pieces and that sound just shakes me to the soul.kingsteven
    • i'd love to compose some really brass heavy music... adore this: https://www.youtube.…kingsteven
    • Wow.monospaced
    • mono could use your expertise! around 1 minute in to that track. is that a french horn/ fist? a particular kind of mute? or just very controlled breathing?kingsteven
    • it sounds like a euphonium to me, seems that range, maybe a trombone but it's not harsh at all (so maybe just due to the direction the horn is facing)kingsteven
    • It could easily be a French horn, but I don't know enough about brass enough to know for sure.monospaced

    • https://johannjohann… bit more digging, no euphoniums in the ensemble... must be french horns and/ or trombonekingsteven
    • rehearsing last night and our cellist who's played in orchestras most of his life (as well as the red wedding on GoT) has never played brass either, shocking.kingsteven
