I've been there many times as a tourist. A lovely town, possibly a bit boring but I've never been there in any other capacity than having some time to kill before a connecting bus or flight. The Jewish old town is neat.
It seemed a bit quiet but Barcelona is nearby if you want to party and there are plenty of places right next on the coast where I'd spend most of my weekends if I lived there. Cadaques, where Dali lived is one of them and really awesome and close.
Not sure where you're coming from, but I'd encourage my wife to take that job :)
