For shits and giggles I went over to the HP website and configured their most powerful workstation desktop. It comes close to the power and expandability of the Mac Pro, but not quite.

    • without the current sale, it's $10,000 more than the Mac Pro ... HP tax?monospaced
    • and for that price, it's got 8x less RAM and less powerful video. just sayin'monospaced
    • Interesting. There’s still myth Apple is much more expensiveNBQ00
    • For the base model, it could be argued it's too expensive. But when you go all out, it's almost a bargain. Regardless, it's not for me.monospaced
    • If anyone doubts this, go ahead and try to configure any PC from any company that's cheaper. Nobody anywhere has been able to.monospaced
    • Also, fuck HP.Nairn
    • my only point is that, once you get into workstation class builds like this, nobody is offering a bargainmonospaced
    • What exactly do you need something like this for? Huge rendering jobs are sent to servers for batch processing.section_014
    • For work that needs it obviously. Believe it or not, rendering models is far from the most intensive computing tasks one might need.monospaced
    • On Dell's site, if you want 1.5TB of RAM, you pay almost $90K. Daaaayum.monospaced
    • Thanks for the comparison... I'm curious what the cost difference would be if you part it out and build it yourselfPonyBoy
    • There are so few consumer parts that can be used to do this it's hard to say. Finding a motherboard and case to match what Apple pulled off is scarce.monospaced
    • You can match or exceed general performance for cheaper but at the expense of expandability I believe. Obviously competition is on.monospaced
    • Regardless of the route I go for my new machine... it would appear I need to start raising my rates. :)PonyBoy
