Some backstory to the pic I posted earlier, it's weird as I had been in Nepal for a month or so, this being 1987, I had got there via travelling with my Aussie girlfriend who I had met in Amsterdam earlier in the year. We decided to travel Asia together but it was pretty stressful (for her) as she kept getting tummy bugs (and nearly had her hand chopped off in a ceiling fan in Bangkok but that's another tale) We spent way too much time getting wasted in Kathmandu - hash was so cheap and easily available, when we arrived at the hotel the first thing our landlady did was offer us a brick of it at a ridiculously cheap price. So we're getting bombed and hanging out with good friends who we had met on our trails - one pair of guys, an American and an Austrian were travelling together and we spent quite a bit of time talking about our different countries and passing the blunts. However one afternoon whilst wandering the streets looking at temples we came across the Austrian guy lying naked in the street stone dead!
We kinda freaked out, it turned out that the American chap saw his mate leap to his death from their 3rd floor hotel window and when we went to comfort him at the hotel the police hooked onto us too as we were the only other folks who had known him. They told us we couldn't leave Nepal until it was all sorted out so we had a bit of an epiphany, we flushed all our dope down the loo and headed out to the nearest hill-station away from the city which had become sad and tainted for us.
The pic was me standing next to a large, wild weed which we had vowed not to smoke as we had decided enough was enough and even though it was not possible to confirm that our friend had killed himself because he'd had a reaction to the drugs on offer, we just thought it best for us to stay clean, go trekking and try to put the bad memories behind us.
I kept a diary of my debauched Asian adventures, Thailand was just ridiculous haha, but the Nepal leg was a low point, even though I was smiling and had a stupid itchy had on. I hope that gives the pic some context.
