ok so the headline and the subhead are super disturbing in the fact they don't seem to align at all

European elections: far-right 'surge' ends in a ripple

Record number of nationalists elected to parliament face struggle to form coherent bloc

like... it's still a RECORD NUMBER of nationalists - the fact that we're just allowing for this far right stuff as a given instead of constantly saying "yo this shit is fucked" ... but at least in america when the left is basically the center-right it's no wonder.

    • Don't believe the media they are just working people up for profit and clicks.robotron3k
    • Media constantly paints nationalism as a dirty word. What's wrong with looking after your own home, having some pride in it, trying to keep it up to standard?shapesalad
    • When you go to nationalistic countries, it's a joy, to eat their food, experience their culture etc - Japan, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Portugal, Iceland...shapesalad
    • ..Countries I've been to where they seem to be proud of their identity, customs and culture, history and foods.shapesalad
    • Would be boring if every country on the planet was multicultural, multiracial, extreme left liberal: non-identity in a way.shapesalad
    • Places like London and NY, where the latest fad revolves around restaurants posing up for Peruvian, or Taiwanese foods..shapesalad
    • because those places have no single identity, melting pots, everything thrown in stew...shapesalad

    • ^ You're describing patriotism/nationali... in the most bland, general sense. Now substitute with the reality of a Trump or Bolsonaro type character, or theyuekit
    • current Brexit mess in the UK, or the AFD in Germany. I don't think preserving the local cuisine has much to do with any of that.yuekit
    • Granted would be nice if after being elected the "far right" simply went about naming additional local national holidays, setting up cultural museums etc, butyuekit
    • not sure that's gonna happen :)yuekit
    • To be precise. Even without reading the article the title makes sense.
It refers to a wave of nationalism in the elections and opposes it a ripple ...

    • ... because the nationalist are unable to form a coherent block. I don't see how this could be disturbing.deadsperm
    • Stating the fact that the nationalist are not able to establish a block is not downplaying the number of votes they got since it's stated in the main title.deadsperm
    • Let's be clear: Europeans are very aware of what the the elections results represent in what concerns the public view of current affairs.deadsperm
