A funny paradox is that free higher education (so-called socialist policy) tends to benefit the people of a country more than the country as an entity.

America's system uniquely creates a vast hierarchy of schools and prices for education, putting many people into great debt. This debt motivates them to work very hard to attain a job they may not like, work longer hours, retire later, etc. This is one, small reason (of a great many reasons) why America is the biggest economy in the world. It's clear now that even while America's economy is stronger than ever, most Americans feel they are struggling and being left behind. The country itself is doing great, the citizens are not doing so well.

In other countries, education is relatively affordable. Students may not require debt at all, and those that do often can pay off their loans in a few years without a great loss to their quality of life. This system tends to benefit the people, but we see these countries tend to be less competitive globally.

The interesting paradox is that the country with the most "free market" education system seems to benefit the country as a whole, not the individual. The more "socialist" educational policies tend to benefit the individual.

    • Of course, I'm only looking at a relatively brief moment in time, and we shouldn't assume that the current state of things is the absolute truth.

    • And by 'country as an entity', you mean the 1%? ;)inv
    • America offers education at different price points giving opportunity for all to learn... But in America you also don't need school to succeed.robotron3k
    • Other countries are better at giving opportunity for all to learn.
      ********
    • You can easily find examples of people who succeeded without advanced education. America is not unique in this regard. Nearly all countries can make this claim.
      ********
    • No @inv I don't mean the 1%. When the American economy is strong, it benefits anyone with a job, a 401k, any investments at all.
      ********
    • Stop blaming the 1% for your situation! America may not have equality and may not be fair, but you probably are doing very well compared to most of the globe.

    • u are mistaken in conclusion. it is historically correct that free markets raise the "whole" while not all individuals achieve such benefits.
      ********
    • while socialist may benefit individuals equally and hurting the whole by holding the all down to certain criteria
      ********
    • but the benefit comes at the price of freedom to achieve. some people happy to be in cages with 3 square meals. but not all
      ********
    • but in free markets some individuals that happen to raise the whole will be sooo much better off than the rest. is that bad?
      ********
    • some also will be shysters and make fortunes while not raising the bar at all... also part of free markets...
      ********
    • i guess im curious mostly to why you think free markets raise the whole, but no benefit to an individual?
      ********
    • how can you raise any group with no individual benefitting? Doesnt make much sense
      ********
    • @deathboy Exactly. So who really benefits?inv
    • I didn't say that no individuals benefit. Free higher education tends to benefit the individual on average. You're confusing "the whole" with "the country."
      ********
    • The semantics in this argument are tricky. When I say "the country" I mean the nation as an entity in the global market.
      ********
    • but you are igoring the individuals for the whole. u say free education benefits the individual on average... is that a measure of it being free or purely educa
      ********
    • tion. Im not sure how free education is defined in quality and substance and how it can benefit individuals better than paid education
      ********
    • but i still think i know what you are suggesting but its an error. economy and scholl/politics will nto work
      ********
    • its better they are separate. lets publicly fund edu defined by a dictator. or fund schools on right/let leaning polciies
      ********
    • it creates an un objective system. politics and edu should be far removed from one another
      ********
    • @inv who benefits... everyone. but some more than others
