Had an intense meltdown today at work. Had been working for this new client, and started building a fresh new branding for them. I was asked to draft the “look & feel” for a corporate brochure. Had a quick meeting with the project manager yesterday to review a timeline which seemed coherent with the job: couple of days drafting content, couple of days between approval and touch-up, and THEN designing. Anyway, we agreed with presenting a “quick mood board to show some graphic intentions”.
This morning I arrive and immediately the PM asks me to brief and delegate the whole thing to a designer. At first I try to understand why, and this person tells me that there’s another, more urgent project for me. Although yesterday the timeline had a clear intention to get an approval of the content prior to landing directly onto the design of the piece itself, suddenly I perceive she is talking about the brochure itself, and not the mood board we had spoken about. I told her I was getting mad with the change in the process, and that this designer had no clue of what to do if we were going to go directly to drafting the brochure instead of putting up some sort of mood board with hints of the overall tone. Well, to sum it up, after arguing for 10 mins I lost it and told the PM “do whatever the fuck you want”, in front of everyone, grabbed my jacket and left.
Returned 15 mins and 2 cigs later to find the CD had resolved to present a mood board with a couple of layouts... plan A. Felt kind of guilty and ashamed but... I did it: I presented the mood board and not the whole fucking brochure with the unapproved content.
- Unfortunately we are paid to act.robotron3k
- It's harder than getting mad, but try to find a way to convince people of what you want. to get them on your side, rather then throw anger at them.shapesalad
- I'm not saying it's easy to do that. I'm certainly struggling. but after years of getting mad at people not knowing the process or sticking to it...shapesalad
- .. I've decided to try to stay calm and persuade them that what I want is what they also want.shapesalad
- Thanks @shapemaquito
- i use slow acting poisons. but calm persuasion can work, too.Gnash
- This isnt just a bandwidth issue. Its a respect issue. They didnt respect your approach and process and so they absolutely deserve the anger.cannonball1978
- Also the PM manages the process in partnership with the CD. It sounds like that is not what is happening here.cannonball1978
- It’s all a test.notype
- Lol Gnash. I assume they deserve it.maquito
