Zoe is called a “golden zebra,” but she is not an unusual species at all. She is a zebra with amelanism, which is decrease in pigmentation. This condition is typically associated with the loss of tyrosinase, an enzyme used in melanin production. Zoe is the only captive zebra with this condition. If she were in the wild, her abnormal coloring would make her a very easy target for predators.
