In a new team at work. All new hires. First few projects done and one guy, nice enough guy, is dragging me down as his work isn't up to the measure. He's kinda ruining my high work quality. And he doesn't seem to know his stuff, softwares etc. Hes getting flustered a little by the work too. And his overall work ethic is a little poor. He's seemingly in same pay and seniority as me. All I can think is 'why did they hire him?' and 'how can I avoid working on projects with him?'.

Wondering how this is going to pan out. Do I air my concerns with my bosses? Or keep going and hope they notice him. I don't want to get involved in office politics or play any part in him being fired etc, but... I can't keep working with him and having my work brought down in quality by his contributions...

    • teach him. help him climb to your level, makes both of you (+ the team) grow.uan

    • Keep your head down let your bosses see. Only have 1-1 chats with your boss about your compensation or your advancement - never waste that opportunityrobotron3k
    • Teach him? - but I taught myself over years, my skills and knowledge are what put food in my mouth and roof over my head. I haven't had an xbox or TV...shapesalad
    • for 20 years, because I spend my spare time learning and developing, I'm not handing over all my hard won knowledge to some lazy ass guy.shapesalad
    • To train him costs the next 25years salary, adjusted for inflation, because if I teach him, whats to stop him pushing me out?shapesalad
    • It's a dog eat dog world. I've learnt sharing your skills while righteous in theory is suicidal in practice.shapesalad
    • nah - I think next review with boss I'm going to voice my concerns, in the meantime I'll do my best to avoid working on projects with him.shapesalad
    • thankfully some other co-workers are noticing he's a charlatan.shapesalad
