My Macbook pro died. And I'm broke.

I borrowed an extremely cheap, extremely plastic'y Lenovo Ideapad 100 laptop (RRP: $299.-). I connected it to my external monitor & sound card. Installed PS, AI, ID and Ableton Live, plus whatever else i usually use.

And it runs everything... very well. Like, i don't know the difference. I'm doing design work and I compose music, just like before.

    WTF?

Makes me think. Do i need a $4000 laptop? Like, could i be perfectly happy with a $1000-$1500 one?

    Hmm....

    • You can buy a shit hot second hand <4 year old Thinkpad with IPS screen, loads of RAM, SSD, i7 from eBay for <£400 from eBay. ...Nairn
    • ...I don't think I'm ever going to buy a new laptop again.Nairn
    • Go Windows, you'll never go back to AppleBennn
    • @Nairn Shit. Just looked at refurbished ThinkPads. Max out the RAM, throw in an SSD. 0__0 my eyes have been opened!jagara
    • shhhh... be quiet, or you will wake up the apple fanboysOBBTKN
    • @jafara - most even come with warranties! Just make sure you check monitor resolution - that's the one thing I didn't when I bought mine before xmas, d'oh!Nairn
    • *jagara, even. I'm not typing this on the Thinkpad - THAT's a decent keyboard, unlike this piece of shit here!Nairn
    • All of what you guys say is true and yet...if I'm going to be staring at a screen for 4-5 hours a day it doesn't seem crazy to drop a couple thousand dollarsyuekit
    • Agreed, but I'm broke.jagara
    • for the best screen/keyboard at least. But then again I don't use external monitor most of the time.yuekit
    • ionly get second hand ones. Linux though not windows!! Amazing hardware. No you dont need anything Applemugwart
    • The game changer nobody talks about much is dropping an SSD in anything that didn't come with one originally will makes any old PC like a new one.evilpeacock
    • That, and new PC speeds aren't as noticeable to the old any more unless you're doing really heavy GPU-based work.evilpeacock
    • @yuekit - a 2-3 year old Thinkpad HAS a decent screen and keyboard though. They're really solid machines. Aside from a small lid scuff, mine's like brand newNairn
    • At this point, the only Adobe software you need a super powerful computer for is AE. Everthing else runs great on pretty much any half decent machine.monospaced
    • My brother was asking me about mac minis and ipad pros for my neice. So she can use facebook and powerpoint. Why would you spend more than $500 for that?i_monk
    • I started to read and I was like I know bro...then the twist and I was yeah I know bro...LOL! I bought one new Mac back in 2007.oey
    • I started to read and I was like I know bro...then the twist and I was yeah I know bro...LOL! I bought one new Mac back in 2007.oey
    • Served me good and I'm still attached to it but I decided to never buy a new computer again (hopefully) and since I leave with people who know the tradeoey
    • I live...fuck! so as was saying since then I'm pretty sure it was a good decision. I also have a ThinkPad apart from my Macs and it totally rocks!oey
    • My current MBP is 10 yrs old. I can't bring myself to buy a new $3500 machine with all these issues attached to themdesmo
    • Unless you are web developer using tons of cool utilities and tools on Mac and code you are probably better off with a Mac (not necessarily a new one), but forBoz
    • anything else, I would always pick a much much cheaper PC laptop. These days they are pretty damn good.Boz
    • Doesn't sound like you need a new laptop, but sounds like you have talent, why you broke?robotron3k
    • Why have Hackintoshes never really taken off?i_monk
    • Hackintoshes still rely so much on 3rd parties to maintain updated drivers, etc. Still require building machines, but it is starting to take off :)monospaced
    • for example, NVIDIA is still yet to release drivers for their entire line of cards that is easily ready to work with mojave.monospaced
    • It requires to build a computer and has more limitation on what part you can use? But otherwise it's getting easier in the last couple yearspango
    • Thanks to Apple. Other computer manufacturers are really upping their games.pango
    • Other than not compatible with some apple only softwares. Many Windows computers are just as good and cheaper.pango
    • @robotron3k a troublesome cocktail of physical and mental health problems is kinda hampering my professional life :)jagara
    • ...that's why broke...jagara
    • welcome to the real world of computers :Dsted
    • ik it sounds complicated but i use vpn and vms with remote desktop for different oses, it's fun when somebody notices that i'm using windows on my mbpsted
    • or that shitty lenovo what i have for like 12 years runs everything smooth, but actually it's just connected to a powerful desktop :)sted
    • what happened to your macbook pro? hard drive, display whats the problem.api
    • @api discrete GPU failure. Can't be repaired.jagara
    • But there is a partial solution: https://realmacmods.…jagara
