    Thought:
I’ve been the art director of an agency for almost 9 years. I am the only "survivor" of around 20 designers (of very diverse characteristics), who have witnessed the appearance of "the digital dpt", with their own digital manager, their processes, their capabilities, and sadly, were not able to cope with that bold line that divides the agency in two: “the art department”, and the “digital department”. And they left. Cause there was no more demand for that “traditional” design jobs.
I’m starting to feel that the line is becoming thinner every day, and that the “traditional design” vs “digital design” is becoming the same thing, only divided by those who still believe there’s two bands in this game that should be played together by both sides.

    • Stay relevant, adapt and keep learning. I've seen some smart people run from tech hurdles and become dinosaurs. Design is design.DRIFTMONKEY
    • But I think if you excel in a niche craft, find room for it outside of the need for a 9-5 job.DRIFTMONKEY
    • There is something to be said about your longevity there and ability to navigate politics...robotron3k
    • Non designers, recruiters etc seem to create the 'digital/non-digital... divide. It's still using adobe suite. It's only the output spec that are different.shapesalad
    • Instead of a TV advert specs, you output from AE the specs instagram require. Instead of a newspaper ad, you animate a few bits and output to html5.shapesalad
    • And in terms of creative/art direction you just consider how and where it's seen, type size, if animated etc. It's not complex this digital stuff.shapesalad
    • Print is way more complex. Out putting for TV broadcast also more complex.shapesalad
    • ^ Disagree, the way the audiences digest content from print, mobile, outdoor, TV is radically different and the Art Direction has to reflect this. For ...Morning_star

    • Sure, but that's a walk in a park for a competent AD/CD to understand.shapesalad
    • It's the same. Same principles still apply. There is no digital vs traditional.Hayoth

      I agree.

    • As a producer, I've found it very handy to ride the line as an "Integrated" Producer.shellie
    • Integrated Producers seem to be the agencies answer to bridge the two departments.shellie
