Today I loaded my Mamiya 645 and headed to Encinitas on a gorgeous morning. My goal was to continue my 'portraits of strangers' photo series. First ten minutes I'm on the street I see a pretty hot girl walking with a guy towards me. She kinda had that Instagram influencer look but way better. I stop them and give them my shpiel about how I would like to make a portrait of her here on the street. Using my, "fashion photographer camera from the 70's.." she sees my 'pro' camera and her eyes got huge.

Boyfriend also agreed so we got started. This is around the time when I usually get a bit nervous and start to fumble with my equipment. Settings, direction of light, background check, composition, all the things I have to think about without being creepy or keeping her standing there while people are walking around. Finally I get everything set and take three good shots. I tell her to let me have a non-smiling one and a couple she can have fun with.

She is all about it!! Obviously has done this before. She made the sexiest poses for me, I mean I was really channeling SimonFFM for a bit there! So I give her my Instagram and walk away, playing it cool, and knowing it's going to be a great day!

I walk further and decide to go into a coffee shop to sit for a bit. Look down at my camera and the first thing I notice is the dark slide on my camera is still between the body and the film back!

    I almost cried. :'-(

    • Lol that happens with film cameraspango
    • weird, on hasselblads the dark slide prevents the shutter from being triggered, I thought it was the same on the 645, sucks man.spl33nidoru
    • Haha. Come clean via Instagram message and you may get another session with her, maybe even just you, her and your Mamiya!microkorg
    • Yes me too! I remember the shutter release locking up with the back slide on before. That’s another thing I’m worried about. I’m afraid in my frenzy..HijoDMaite
    • I may have forced something. Because I definitely heard the shutter slaps. The rest of the roll seemed to have advanced and worked fine though.HijoDMaite
    • If it keeps happening, get yourself a red dark slide, much harder to forget! and like microkorg said, good opportunity to redo the shoot minus the stress!spl33nidoru
    • say the film got messed up but you really had fun working with her and if she (and BF) wants to come along to a studio you can try and get some good shots done.mugwart
    • if she likes modeling and you like shooting and envorment is safe ... can only be fun. SimonFFM needs to have a good run for his money ;-)mugwart
