    The general average of inflation per year is about 3% (ie. the cost of living goes up 3% each year). If you've exceeded your employers expectations you should ask for at least 5% - if you work for a big corporation they usually have a company budget for raises - unfortunately this means that you may not get as much as you want if lots of big wigs in the company get big raises. But generally, your manager probably already has their mind made up on how much they want to give you - asking is just a companies way of being polite.
