I haven't done websites forever so this will be a naive question. Some guy wants a website with 500 videos. What's the easiest way of doing this? I tried getting 20k for it but he said his budget is 10k. If I take it, what's the most easy way of displaying 500 videos without making each one a separate page? Can all the videos be on the server, and then one page with all the thumbails. When the user clicks on the thumbnail it overlays the video?

    • can i do this in squarespace lol?pinkfloyd
    • https://www.wix.com/…
      :)
      Gnash
    • i helped a friend put together a site with about 30 of his videos. He was already using wix for 4 of his other sites and wanted to stay in that ecosystemGnash
    • shockingly, it was one of the easier "friend" projects I'd ever done. tons of video options via built-in and with extra plugins you can do even moreGnash
    • this was free, mind you. I'd have a hard time charging 10K for a wix site ;)Gnash
    • Sounds like easy money. I wonder if squarespace can do the same as I've always wanted to learn / use squarespacepinkfloyd
    • You could feed the uploaded videos from a wix server or just point the vids to wix from youtube or vimeo library.Gnash
    • it even pulled the titles and seo from YTGnash
    • Always link to videos on YT/Vimeo, if he has them all uploaded to a channel it is v.easy to display the video thumbnails on a website. Wordpress has manyfadein11
    • he said he wants his video sitting on his site w/o youtubepinkfloyd
    • plugins to do this and other platforms. Never try to host video that is likely to get a lot of plays or that quantity of video. Unless he has big server budgetfadein11
    • Squarespace allows you to embed a YT channel but no need to do that really and it will look unbranded. Just create thumbnails of each vid and then link to YT infadein11
    • a lightbox, it's no harder than creating an image gallery.fadein11
    • yeah thats easy then, just use the YT embed code for each video, laborious on 500 videos but it is what it is... or embed the whole channel, but that will befadein11
    • branded like YT with little customisation options. 500 thumbnails linking to a lightbox video player will be the best option.fadein11
    • if w/o any YT then you will need to use a custom video player that will play from YT.fadein11
    • you just made 8 notes in a row about youtube but he doesn't want to use youtubepinkfloyd
    • use vimeo. a little $$ will buy you a pro account and you can take out all of the annoying clutter and just show the vids.hans_glib
    • hosting the vids elsewhere makes sense as bandwidth will rapidly become an issue otherwise.

and vimeo pro allows you to make vids private
      hans_glib
    • that sounds nice thxpinkfloyd
    • you can use a custom video player to play YT videos without any indication its YT. Are his videos hosted anywhere currently?fadein11
    • if not just use Vimeo or YT. But hosting 500 videos on Squarespace is not an option. Why does he hate YouTube? no budget but expect to build their own streamingfadein11

    • google drive - but can't to remove the 'pop-out' button.shapesalad
    • sorry if over enthusiastic, been here a few times before and on that budget no point reinventing the wheel as it werefadein11

    • I've been asked by clients to self host video numerous times and its totally pointless, how the fuck have i offended you by trying to help? Lolfadein11
    • i have more money than youpinkfloyd
    • Eh? Wtf are you talking about? Wow, get your shit together dudefadein11
    • host on YT etc, use this https://github.com/s…shapesalad
    • Indeed shape, lets see if you get random abuse lolfadein11
    • lolpinkfloyd
    • My buddy ended up hosting some on YT (those he wanted to track with social media), and the rest on a private Vimeo.Gnash
    • both ways he choose to suppress the YT and Vimeo branding so there was no indication that they were hosted off-siteGnash
    • Exactly gnash, its the best way. Vimeo has a nicer interface but plenty of options to customise both. Self hosting 500 vids on squarespace/wix is never gonna hafadein11
