If you don't give a fuck about IE or Edge (I don't), just apply the background to the container and apply a mix-blend-mode to the video:
.video-container {
background: linear-gradient(to bottom, white 70%, black 100%) white;
}video {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
mix-blend-mode: multiply;
