Send a portfolio package to 20 firms in your town. Follow up with phone calls. Follow up with more phone calls. Make them know who you are and that you are eager. But not to the point of obsessive. My theory is either they are going to like you or dislike you - either way they know who you are. Obviously dislike isnt going to get you the job but if they are superdicks at least you will be that guy who keeps reminding them you are looking for work. I once got a job by walking in the front door with portfolio in hand getting the head of the company to check my work in the lobby. I walked out with a job.
Additionally dont be like everyone here where they expect top dollar right off the bat. Go in low and let them realize that you know what youre doing. Raises will come if you vibe that the company is cool. And again - another obvious - youre not going in low like 20 grand a year. If youre fresh from school go in around 40-50. Just expect that the next 5 years are career building. You do good work, youre nice and prompt... you should have no problems getting raises. Then you have a portolio and launching ground to getting a higher paid job.
