Searched for a job for 14 months to find a job. I did all the standard portfolio/resume/CD stuff, plus a few extra promos just to get the attention of the agencies. Nothing.
Got desperate, so I walked around town holding a huge sandwich board advertising my skills to passers-by. Got on the radio, TV and in the paper twice...but no job offers.
Then a friend of a friend heard her company was looking for a designer and suggested me. I was hired within a week.
